Project Summary

Core Connections engages the community in conversations with our youth to identify needs and develop a strategic plan for providing resources for all youth. As a result, youth will develop intergenerational connections supported by enriched programming which eliminates gaps and barriers.

About me

I am a mother of four children with a doctorate in Human Development and Counseling who decided with my husband that Dubuque would be a great place to raise our family. I assumed this volunteer position because I have a passion for improving the lives of children and their families. Previously, I was employed for 14 years with as a School-based Therapist working with youth, families and schools to support each child to realize their full potential. In that position I recognized that gaps and barriers in our community interfere with children and their families accessing services, hindering children from becoming healthy, engaged citizens. I have been on the leadership team of establishing two other organizations, a parent operated Montessori school and Child Care Resource and Referral both still providing services for children and their families. The Make It Your Own grant would give MVP an opportunity to establish youth councils, ensuring that community planning includes the youth voice. MVP is funded solely through grants and does not provide services. We function as a link between agencies and a catalyst for programming and collaboration. Since MVP's inception in Dubuque in 2004, community recognition of MVP has grown. The Every Child/Every Promise Initiative has heightened community awareness of youth needs and empowered our twenty Board Members, representing civic, business and community leaders, to become more proactive for the interests of youth in our community
