WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR THIS PROGRAMWhile the Make It Your Own Awards grants were awarded in May 2008, the projects live on. This site has been archived to serve as a resource for anyone wishing to create a similar project in their community.Saving Our SchoolsProject SummarySaving Our Schools will support and expand a group of concerned parents and community members who want to improve the quality of education for all of the children in the St. Louis Public Schools. It will improve communication and resources that bring people together to work for better schools. About meI am a married stay at home mom, a graduate of the New York City public schools and the State University of New York. My grandmother never learned to read or write. Once I learned my ABCs and numbers, I had to dial the phone for her, something I've never forgotten. I am interested in the grant to reach more of the parents of the 32,000 students in the SLPS and get them involved in their schools and OPEN by being able to print the SLS Watch. It will also help provide transportation for parents with limited means to get to school board, PTO and OPEN committee meetings such as the speaker's bureau, media and communications. We will accomplish our goals through committee work. Because of rising gas prices, we could only provide transportation in some cases if we could reimburse drivers for fuel. The grant could also seed our application for federal not for profit status so we could apply for more grants. I am not comfortable giving the names of other team members at this time. Several of our parents, mothers as well as fathers, are highly educated young professionals. Others are elderly retirees. One is an African American civil rights activist who spent his long career working for economic justice. We have single mothers raising children alone and married couples both of whom work. We are white, black and bi-racial, urban and suburban. I doubt you will find a more diverse group. |
